- The East End Film Festival has just begun
- As has the London Sci Fi Film Festival
- Breakin' Convention brings hip hop to Sadler's Wells with a whole weekend of film, dance, workshops, breakin', poppin', lockin', freestylin', graf, beats, rhymes, MCs and DJs, and all that, masterminded by Jonzi D
- Hampton Court Palace stages a Courtly Love weekend, themed around a loved up Henry VIII wooing Jane Seymour. Learn about the Tudor Mayday rituals, courtly dancing, make masques and join in a jolly big masque in the afternoon. Normal admission charges apply.
- The Camden Crawl music fest and Comedy Crawl funny fest simultaneously take over NW1, Saturday and Sunday
- Little Venice has fun with the Canalway Cavalade 2011, Saturday to Monday. Over 100 colourful boats, real ale, kids stuff, music and more, with a special procession on Sunday night. From 10am each day, free.
- Catch the tasselled tailfeathers of London Burlesque Week which closes on Saturday night
Friday:
- Take a musical amble around E1 with Chris Roberts and Nigel of Bermondsey for Terrible Tides and Deathly Docks, the Ratcliffe & Wapping: Cable Street to Wapping waterfront walk. Free, meet 2pm.
- It's the 17 Anniversary ride for Critical Mass. Meet 6pm under Waterloo Bridge.
- South London Gallery has a free screening of film 'Looking for Sierra Leone' made in Southwark to reflect on Sierra Leone at 50. 7-9pm, booking recommended.
- Run Riot runs riot at the Roundhouse with special events around 'The Fat Girl Gets A Haircut & Other Stories' with a 'No Shame' after party. Tickets £15.
Saturday:
- Watch the Slowalk (in support of Ai Weiwei) in the Turbine Hall, Tate Modern between 12-2pm, free.
- The monthly Stour Space Designers Market is on between noon - 6pm punting everything from craft products, art, gifts and edible treats at this Fish Island performance and exhibition space in E3.
- Greenwich International String Quartet Festival premieres new work 'Marathon' on the Upper Deck at National Maritime Museum at 2.30pm. Free to attend.
- Fisher FC play their last match of the season against Sevenoaks Town at Champion Hill Stadium, East Dulwich SE22, KO 3pm, adults £6, kids £1.
- Join mass music making on the Southbank as Billy Bragg leads the Big Busk. Meet Billy and rehearse inside the Festival Hall from 1pm then busk outside by the river from 3pm. Free to participate.
- Spoonfed recommend you go vintage clubbing with the Big Ten Inch at the Book Club, Leonard Street EC2. 8pm-2am, £5 in.
May Day Sunday:
- The traditional London May Day Trade Union march celebrating International Workers Day and protesting to save jobs and services assembles on Clerkenwell Green at midday and moves to Trafalgar Square for a rally about 1pm. This overlaps with a 48 hour occupation of Trafalgar Square by anti-cuts protestors, starting Saturday night.
- Go to the Brick Box at Tooting Market, SW17 for the Galloping Cuckoos, The Portable Ideas Live Art Collective, Gong Sound Bath, Mamoru Iriguchi, Spanner Jazz Punks, Sara Popowa, Kalia Maliali and Centrepoint Underconstracted! No, we've no idea what any of it means either but it's springy and free. Follow @thebrickbox for enlightenment.
- Mayday is big for morris dancing. Catch New Esperance ladies jigging round Islington and the Fowlers Troop and Deptford Jack in the Green tour Greenwich in a round trip from the Ashburnam Arms from midday, accompanied by mummers. Plus, Transpontine's produced a pamphlet all about the history of May Day and South London, look.
- Last chance to see the free Deutsche Borse photography prize exhibition at Ambika P3.
- Go afternoon clubbing with the secretsundaze opening party on their 10th anniversary from 2pm-10.30pm in Greenwich. Tickets £17.
Bank Holiday Monday
- The East End Film Festival Fringe presents Movie Mayday with free cinema, tours, talks, quizzes and more between noon and 8pm. Find out what's what at the Vibe Bar, Brick Lane.
- You can make your own Jack in the Green with the kids at Museum of London Docklands from 11am.
- Guanabara Social Club is the place to samba and snack on Brazilian street food. Free entry, 7.30pm till late, Parker Street WC2.
