London Christmas Gift Guide: London Experiences

Left the Christmas shopping to the last minute and now the shops have sold out of everything? No fear, these gifts can all be bought online. In most cases, you just need to print something out and hand it to the recipient.

For any London aficionado, the ultimate gift has got to be membership to London Historians. This group of like-minded Londoners who like to explore the city in more depth has been going for five years and has grown to over 550 members. Throughout 2015, the group hosted or co-hosted 50 events including 11 livery hall guided visits, and tours of police stations, factories, museums, historic houses and archives.

Got a friend who's the very embodiment of a culture vulture? You know, the one who's always sneaking off to the latest art exhibition. Art Fund's National Art Pass offers free entry to hundreds of museums across the UK, plus 50% off major exhibitions. London venues include Royal Academy and Somerset House. See the full London list.

While London may not be known for its safari options, there are still plenty of opportunities for animal lovers to get hands on with their favourite creatures. ZSL London Zoo's Meet the Animals experiences are a chance to get up close to penguins, giraffes, meerkats, or some of London Zoo's other animals. If you want to splash out a bit more, how about spending a night with London Zoo's lions?

London Helicopter Tours

So they think they know London, but do they really know London? They'll see the city from a completely new perspective on a London Helicopter Tour. It's not the cheapest gift option, granted, but where else can you see the city from this perspective? Choose from day or night flights, champagne flights and more.

Got a budding Helen Skelton on your hands? Get their adrenaline going with a spin around the white water rafting course at Lee Valley White Water Centre. It was built especially for the London 2012 Olympics, so there's some sporting history attached too. We had a go and lived to tell the tale.

Bunting necklace jewellery workshop

A skill is for life, not just for Christmas, which is why it's an excellent idea to send your amigo on a Tatty Devine jewellery making workshop. The east London brand teaches you how to make specific items from their collection at their Brick Lane workspace. At the time of writing, the dinosaur necklace workshop is sold out (*sob*), but parakeets, leopards and bunting are still available.

Make sure it's not you cooking next year's Christmas dinner by sending someone on a L'Atelier Des Chefs cooking class. Class themes range from macaroons, to Thai cuisine to how to cook the perfect steak.
