Central Line Disruption Could Last Until Midday

The Central line remains suspended between Leytonstone and Bethnal Green due to a burst water main at Stratford.

Passengers had to be led off a train after a Thames Water pipe burst on Wednesday afternoon, causing around 2m litres of water to pour down a ventilation shaft and flood tracks at Stratford station.

Although Transport for London clearly can't be blamed for this latest soggy snafu, the recent Jubilee line problems and other line failures accompanied by the persistent union rumblings about strikes aren't filling people with confidence so close to the Olympics.

As if by way of an apology, Thames Water also announced this morning that it could lift the hosepipe ban imposed earlier this year; we assume that the rainfall during the Jubilee celebrations makes up for the 2m litres lost in Stratford. A contrite spokesman for Thames Water said:

"We are currently working really hard to repair a pipe that has burst in Wick Lane causing disruption to the Central Line. We're really sorry for the disruption this is causing."

Tickets are being accepted on local buses, Greater Anglia and First Great Western services while replacement buses are running between Leytonstone and Stratford; and between Leytonstone and Mile End. Keep an eye on TfL's live service updates.
