Note: we've had such a good response to the email address at the foot of this post that this event is now fully subscribed.

Five ways to put on an evening devoted to London's incomparable history without things getting a bit dry:

  1. Hold it in a lovely old Spitalfields pub.
  2. Pick some good speakers: Lucy Inglis of Georgian London; and Prof. Jerry White, author of London: The Story of A Great City and London in the 20th Century.
  3. Throw in some musical interludes courtesy of troubadour Ruairidh Anderson, who specialises in ballads that tell the tales of famous and infamous characters from the East End.
  4. Hold a rapid-fire pub quiz on the history of London, with special prizes.
  5. Finish with an open-mic session in which anyone in the audience with a question or anecdote about London's history can get up and speak.

This is the inaugural History in the Pub, to be held on Wednesday 21 September, upstairs at The Bell, Middlesex Street, Spitalfields. It's organised by London Historians, an organisation for anyone with an interest in the capital's past. Your host for the evening is Londonist M@, who'll also be setting the quiz questions.

The fun starts at 7pm (arrive earlier to be sure of a seat), in the Bell's upstairs bar. Entry is free for London Historians members and £3 for non-members. Full info here. Spaces are limited, so please email admin@londonhistorians.org to express interest (no obligation) so that they can estimate numbers.

Hope to see some of you there.
