Classic Outdoor Cinema At London's Parks

Pop up cinema

We've had boats. We've had rooftops. We've even had hot tubs. Just when we thought London had exhausted all outdoor cinema possibilities, we heard about the Pop-Up Screens tour of London this summer.

This is an event aimed at people who just want straight forward outdoor cinema, no quirky locations or fuss, just decent films in London parks. Pop-Up Screens caters for Londoners outside of the centre too, with screenings in Lewisham, Morden and Blackheath.

For three months, the screen will be popping up at a different venue every weekend, starting at Morden Hall Park on 11 July, and finishing the season at East Greenwich Pleasaunce on 27 September. Other locations include Holborn, Fulham and Hammersmith.

And the films on offer look pretty good too. Outdoor cinema prerequisites Grease (Ravenscourt Park, 3 August), The Big Lebowski (Manor House Gardens, 9 August) and Top Gun (Manor House, 10 August) all made the cut, but some unexpected gems are thrown in as well. The well-heeled of Hammersmith can catch The Devil Wears Prada, Fulham can hark back to the '90s with Empire Records, and The Goonies take over Greenwich.

At £10 a screening, or £25 for a weekend ticket of three screenings, it's cheaper than a trip to most central London cinemas. Or truly dedicated film buffs can buy a season pass for £75. If you're going for this option, might we suggest some waterproof clothing, this being England.

The audience are encouraged to bring their own seating, the guideline being 'if you can carry it, then you can bring it'. If you work up a thirst, there will be a fully stocked bar, complete with snacks, and we're promised the launch of Pop-Up Burger at this year's event too.

Pop-Up Screens runs 11 July-27 September at various locations. Tickets, £10-£25, are available here.
