This magnificent place looks and feels like it has some history. Cuddling up to the northern gates of Victoria Park, it has no trouble attracting custom at a weekend. People spill out left, right and centre during the summer months.
It's very much a pub of two halves. The front bar has a lovely old (mahogany?) bar, incorporating a pedimented clock on Corinthian columns. Try saying that after a pint or three. Round the back, a large dining space known as the Garden Room (this time with composite columns) packs in the tables, presided over by a Discobolus statue that's been there for years. A moderately sized beer garden overlooking the park completes the picture. A reasonable selection of beers, particularly good on premium lagers, though nothing outstanding.
