This distinctive wedge-shaped plot has had a turbulent recent history, trading as the Charterhouse bar and then Beer Hawk, before closing down during the pandemic. It's now reincarnated as Smithfield Tap, carrying on the Beer Hawk thing of doing good beer and lots of it. Not to be confused with the nearby Farrindgon Tap, below Holborn Viaduct — though the two have similar vibes and offerings.

If the downstairs is a bit crowded — or even if it isn't — head upstairs to find more seating. This triangular room has plenty of character, and offers unique views of the area if you're lucky enough to get the seat in the 'pointy bit' of the room. You'll also find a shuffleboard on this upper deck.

The beer selection is an odd one. On the face of it, they appear to have loads, and scrawl it all up on a menu like champs. But on closer inspection, many of the beers are mainstream fare you'll find anywhere. All keg, too. Still, it's a better selection than your average pub.
