What are you doing on Saturday 22 June 2024? Because here's a London demonstration we can surely all get behind.

The Restore Nature Now march will "Call on all political parties to take action to restore nature and tackle climate change in the UK". Organisers hope to make this the largest UK demonstration ever assembled in support of the natural environment.

The family-friendly, legal march has the support of a myriad of organisations, including the RSPB, London Wildlife Trust, WWF-UK, the National Trust and many more.

Organisers want the General Election to be a turning point for nature in this country. And big action is needed. The UK has "led the world" in destroying its natural environment. According to Beccy Speight, the CEO of the RSPB:

Here in the UK, we care deeply about nature. But last year's State of Nature report laid out a grim picture, finding that there’s been no let-up in the decline of our wildlife over recent decades, with one in six species now at risk of being lost from our shores.

Chris Packham is among those calling most strongly for a politically-led change in direction:

"Ticking a box, signing a petition, sharing a post — it’s simply not enough when we are facing the collapse of our living systems. It's time for all of us to take to the streets, shoulder to shoulder, whoever we are and demand our leaders Restore Nature Now."

The main point of the march is to show politicians just how deeply people care about these issues, and to call for better leadership. But it also has specific demands. Organisers want to see more money going to eco-friendly farming, higher taxes on polluters, an end to new fossil fuels, greater space given to wildlife, a raft of measures to tackle climate change, and other interventions enshrined in an Environmental Rights Bill.

Restore Nature Now will take place on 22 June 2024, beginning from midday at Park Lane and marching to a rally in Parliament Square. For more information and to pledge your support, see the Restore Nature Now website.
