London has recorded far more COVID-19 cases than any other English region.

According to Public Health England, 2,872 people in London have been diagnosed with the virus as of 9am on 25 March 2020. In total, London is home to over 41% of the 6,843 people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in England.

Before we take a closer look at the statistics, it's worth noting that the actual number of coronavirus cases in London and beyond is likely much higher than those which have been recorded. This is due to the current lack of widespread testing, even for those who are experiencing symptoms.

Which London borough has recorded the most coronavirus cases?

At the time of writing Lambeth has the highest concentration of people who have tested positive for coronavirus, with 188 cases recorded across the borough.

Which other boroughs have recorded a high number of coronavirus cases?

Lambeth's neighbour, Southwark has recorded 181 cases. Brent has 170 confirmed cases, Wandsworth has 155 and the City of Westminster — the home of UK parliament — follows closely behind with 143 cases.

Which London boroughs have recorded the least number of coronavirus cases?

Both Kingston-upon-Thames and Richmond-upon-Thames have to date recorded 36 cases, the joint lowest number in the capital. The boroughs of Sutton, Havering, Barking & Dagenham and Bexley have each recorded less than 50 cases.

How has the spread of COVID-19 in London changed over the last week?

Since Monday 16 March, the number of coronavirus cases in London has risen by 606%. This rapid increase reflects Prime Minister Boris Johnson's statement that the capital is weeks ahead of other regions in terms of the coronavirus curve.

At the beginning of last week, Kensington & Chelsea had recorded highest number of coronavirus cases in the capital, with 43 across London's least-populated borough. Some suggested that this could be due to the international lifestyles of the borough's wealthy residents, and that recent ski trips to hard-hit northern Italy could be behind the rise. However, that is pure speculation and — due to the lack of mass coronavirus testing — it's difficult to glean much in terms of how behavioural patterns have influenced the spread.
