It's impossible not to be charmed by this colourful new map from street artist Angry Dan.
The spread packs in some 850 cultural landmarks, all in a playful celebratory style. The map stretches from the mast of Alexandra Palace in the north to its counterpoint in Crystal Palace to the south; from Wembley in the north-west to Maritime Greenwich in the south-east.
Alongside the obvious, you'll also find many minor or little-known cultural gems, such as the tumbling phone boxes of Kingston, the "skateboard graveyard" on the Golden Jubilee Bridges and a Hellraiser VHS tape on Old Kent Road (if you know, you know). Look out also for the nods to many famous Londoners, including Michael Caine, Dizzee Rascal, Amy Winehouse and Alan Turing.
According to the Walthamstow-based artist, the work took over 1,000 hours of research, planning and drawing, and we can well believe it. A1 prints are available direct from Angry Dan.
An enlarged version of the map will also be pasted to the floor of Mandeville Place, in the Olympic Park on the 8 September — part of London Mural Festival.
This is the very best of maps — one that is visually arresting at the large scale, but whose true beauty lies in the detail.
