On your own on Christmas Day? One south London pub is opening its doors to anyone who doesn't want to spend the day alone — and throwing in a free Christmas lunch.

The lovely team at 'The Alex' have been offering free Christmas Day lunches for several years now, with the exception of 2020 for obvious reasons. It's a simple idea, but one that has no doubt transformed many people's Christmasses over the years: just turn up, alone, anytime between 12pm and 3pm on Christmas Day, and the team will find you a seat with others in the same position, and serve you a Christmas lunch and wine, all for free, no questions asked.

In 2021, 146 people turned up and were given food, drink and company on Christmas Day.

The Alex, which features in our London pub database, is a real community-spirited pub all year round. Recently, managers Sarah and Mick took part in a charity sleep out to support the homeless, with pub quizzes and other events going on throughout the year, and it won the ‘Contribution to the Community’ award at The Merton Business Awards 2022. In short, it's a pub worth supporting all year round.
