M@London Anachronisms: Timewarp Photos Of The Capital
May not be based on actual events. The Battle of Princeton might have turned out differently had the British had light sabres and cover from the Death Star. This curious mural is in the basement of the Marquis Conrwallis pub in Bloomsbury. Image: Matt Brown
In search of London's anachronisms.
London, more than most cities, is a patchwork of the ultra-modern beside the ancient past. Sometimes the different eras can rub up against each other a little too closely. The photos below show a few tongue-in-cheek occasions when the past and present have co-mingled: from the Roman emperor with the mobile phone, to the inventor of time travel himself.
Roman emperor Trajan shows off his new mobile phone. Image sent in by @kevorrAh, Five Guys, that much-cherished Victorian fast-food joint. According to this clock on Croydon's high street, the firm dates back to 1884.More mobile phone action on the platforms of Charing Cross, where this medieval artisan appears to be taking a selfie. The scene is part of David Gentleman's mural, which runs the full length of the platform. Image: Matt BrownMuseum of London's 2015 Gladiator Games at Guildhall were a right laugh. Our compere for the evening certainly looked the part, right down to his third-century AD roving microphone. We spotted this little cherub on top of a clock in Armourers' Hall near Moorgate. Image: Matt BrownOh, go on then. One more ancient thing taking a selfie. This time, we're in the V&A's cast court, where one of the supporting ladies on this tomb is so bored she's checking her phone. It still looks the part... apart from one rather obvious mod-con. Image: Matt BrownPlaque to the future. Peter Berthoud captured this memorial to the inventor of time travel, Jacob von Hogflume. The mysterious gent has had several plaques across the UK; this one was in Golden Square, Soho.
