London Anachronisms: Timewarp Photos Of The Capital
The Battle of Princeton, but with lightsabres
May not be based on actual events. The Battle of Princeton might have turned out differently had the British had light sabres and cover from the Death Star. This curious mural is in the basement of the Marquis Conrwallis pub in Bloomsbury. Image: Matt Brown

In search of London's anachronisms.

London, more than most cities, is a patchwork of the ultra-modern beside the ancient past. Sometimes the different eras can rub up against each other a little too closely. The photos below show a few tongue-in-cheek occasions when the past and present have co-mingled: from the Roman emperor with the mobile phone, to the inventor of time travel himself.

Five Guys clock in croydon
Ah, Five Guys, that much-cherished Victorian fast-food joint. According to this clock on Croydon's high street, the firm dates back to 1884.
A drawing of a medieval peasant painting with one hand and taking a selfie with another
More mobile phone action on the platforms of Charing Cross, where this medieval artisan appears to be taking a selfie. The scene is part of David Gentleman's mural, which runs the full length of the platform. Image: Matt Brown
A gladiator at Guildhall Yard
Museum of London's 2015 Gladiator Games at Guildhall were a right laugh. Our compere for the evening certainly looked the part, right down to his third-century AD roving microphone. Image: Matt Brown
An assyrian tablet with a god wearing a watch
Stuff you learn at the British Museum, number 237... the Assyrians invented both the wristwatch and the manbag. Image: Matt Brown
A georgian cherub taking a selfie
Georgian selfie? We spotted this little cherub on top of a clock in Armourers' Hall near Moorgate. Image: Matt Brown
A monument in the v and a with a lady checking her phone
Oh, go on then. One more ancient thing taking a selfie. This time, we're in the V&A's cast court, where one of the supporting ladies on this tomb is so bored she's checking her phone. Image: Matt Brown

Inside charterhouse's chapel
The chapel at Charterhouse near Farringdon has medieval origins. It still looks the part... apart from one rather obvious mod-con. Image: Matt Brown
A plaque to jacob von hogflume
Plaque to the future. Peter Berthoud captured this memorial to the inventor of time travel, Jacob von Hogflume. The mysterious gent has had several plaques across the UK; this one was in Golden Square, Soho.
