BLOOD: Today’s opportunities to donate blood are at The Hop Exchange in Southwark Street, Paddington Central Station (Building 3) and the usual donor centres. See site for terms and conditions.

THAMES EXHIBITION: Artist Tom Farmer exhibits his new photographic display at the Embassy Tea Gallery in conjunction with Totally Thames Festival. Thames: Dark River, Still Shining documents people and communities living along the course of the waterway and examines their connections to the river and surrounding landscape. Free, until 7 September

CIDER FESTIVAL: The Crabtree in Fulham hosts a free-entry cider festival on its premises. There will be ciders from all over the UK plus competitions and plenty of food. Free, just turn up, until 14 September

FILM FESTIVAL: Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival starts today. There will be over 30 screenings taking place at 25 different venues like pubs, parks, historic buildings and the library. See website for full programme. Free, until 14 September

REGENT'S CANAL: Join Bowlers Walking Tours for a guided walk from Angel to London Fields, exploring the Regent's Canal. Photography aficionados are welcome. Meeting point is outside Angel tube station. £10, prebook, 2pm

FRESH ART SHOW: Get in early to see the next generation of art stars at the Slade Summer School Foundation Show. The full range of disciplines is on show — with artists to watch including Ella Wills, Abi Huxtable, Helen Lodge and Sarah Porter. It's on at the Slade School on Gower Street. Free just turn up,  10am - 5pm

SUMMER NIGHTS: The ever-popular Camden Lock Night Market is back — but tonight is the last chance to enjoy it. The main focus is international street food, accompanied by live music, film screenings and late night shopping. Free, just turn up, from 5pm

ROOFTOP ART: Rockwell House in Shoreditch hosts an evening of live painting and music on its rooftop. The event is free, on a first-come first-served basis, so get there early to avoid disappointment. Free, just turn up, 6pm-11pm

THEATRE ON SCREEN: See the National Theatre's current production of Medea screened at Rich Mix in Shoreditch. Euripides' tragedy is about a mother and wife, looking for revenge after being abandoned by her husband. £16.50/£13.50, prebook, 7pm

BABY P TALK: Ray Jones, author of The Story Of Baby P, is in conversation with Patrick Butler, editor of society, health and education policy for the Guardian. It's about the death of baby Peter Connelly and the social workers who were blamed. At Big Green Bookshop in Wood Green. £3, prebook, 7pm

ROYAL INSTITUTION: The scientific institution hosts a night dedicated to the Bloomsbury Theatre. A group of experts will introduce the changes planned for the theatre, one of London’s most renowned venues for comedy and science entertainment. £12/£8, prebook, 7pm  

GIG: Listen to Broken Records performing live at The Lexington in Angel. They will be accompanied by Longfellow, The Traps and Disorder DJs. £10+bf, prebook, from 7.30pm

COMEDY: Enjoy a fun stand-up comedy night at the Hackney Picturehouse. On stage will be Alfie Brown, Joey Page, Luke Graves, Harriet Kemsley and Saskia Preston. £5, prebook, 8pm

MUSEUM TALK: The National Maritime Museum hosts a talk about longitude. Join Dr Katy Barrett and Dr Victoria Carolan as they reflect on some of the quirkiest ways the quest for longitude was represented in the 18th century, while also discussing how navigation continues to be shown on screen in the modern age. £5/£4 members, 6.30pm

Good Cause of the Day

On Saturday 13 September ladies are invited to wear their pyjamas and take part in a charity walk to support of Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice. The Moonlit Walk starts at 10 pm and finishes in the Broadway Shopping Centre in Bexleyheath. Mingle with members of staff and help fundraising for the community hospice. £25/£15, prebook, from 10pm
