Kerb is the food scene’s answer to the Mafia — not in a violent way — but in that it claims London’s streets as its own and floods them with the flavours and smells of street food.
There are already Kerb markets in King’s Cross, at the Gherkin and on the Southbank, and now plans for a series of night markets in Elephant and Castle have been announced.
Carnival del Kerb will run for four Friday nights from 22 August to 12 September in new events space The Paperworks. Set just off Newington Causeway, the open-air venue simply dubbed as a ‘creative space’ has been set-up by nearby Corsica Studios in partnership with Peabody. It occupies a spot that will eventually be developed as part of the wider Elephant and Castle regeneration project, but is to be considered permanent for the time being.
The Carnival evenings will run from 5pm to 11pm, bringing together 12 street food traders alongside tunes from South London disco band Love Glove and a fully-loaded bar serving cocktails, wines, spirits and local beers.
The food offer includes Mexican street food from Luardos, Korean burritos from Kimchinary, schnitzels from Fleisch Mob, creole from Vinn Goute, and sweet treats from You Doughnut. The other stalls are: BBQ Dreamz, Bill Or Beak, Crabbieshack, Kothu Kothu, Miss P’s Barbecue and the marvellously named The Everybody Love Love Jhal Muri Express.
