PORTRAIT EXHIBITION: The Society of Antiquaries, located at Burlington House in Piccadilly, opens a new exhibition today. It’s a collection of paintings including portraits of 18th-century antiquaries and rare 15th- and 16th-century portraits of medieval and Tudor monarchs and rulers of early modern Europe. WORLD WAR ONE READING: As part of the Waterloo Festival 2014, there is a reading of poetry, letters and memoirs from World War One. Includes work by Rupert Brooke, Rudyard Kipling, Jessie Pope, Wilfred Owen and Edith Nesbit. £5/£4, prebook, 3.30pm

UNDERGROUND PHOTOS: At Rich Mix in Shoreditch, Bob Mazzer launches his book of Underground photographs. The pictures date from the 1970s and catch a series of individual moments on the Tube, and he will be talking about them. Free, prebooking essential, 7pm

ITALIAN WAYS: Tim Parks’ new book captures the essence of Italian life and looks at how Italians view themselves, with specific reference to the Italian railways. He is at Daunt Books in Marylebone to discuss the book. £8, prebook, 7pm

Good Cause of the Day

Today is the start of Action For Kids' Beach Volleyball Tournament at Canary Wharf. Until 18 July, teams will compete against each other while raising money for Action For Kids. Enter a team of 5-12 people in the tournament for a registration fee of £250, or go down and show your support for free.

London Connection Puzzle

Congratulations to Charlene Concepcion, who was first (of many) to guess the solution to last week's puzzle. THOR, ODIN, CEDRIC and HARDEY are all names of Tower of London ravens. A new puzzle, set by Charlene, starts tomorrow.
