PHOTO FESTIVAL: The themes for this year's London Photo Festival are Black & White and Night Photography. Head to The Crypt on Borough High Street for a showcase of new and emerging photography talent. Free, just turn up, until 5 October

PORTUGUESE FILM: For the next two days, the West Reservoir Centre in Stoke Newington is the setting for the first IndieLisboa Festival Sessions in London — where 10 Portuguese short films will be screened, accompanied by Portuguese wine, beer and food. £15 (both days) / £9 (one day), prebook, until 4 October

PERFORMANCE: Shoreditch Town Hall kicks off its autumn season of theatre and music with a work-in-progress storytelling of a missionary who loses his faith, and a unique Amazonian tribe who turn the world of linguistics upside down. Free, prebook, 7pm

Good Cause of the Day

Following his BBC Radio 4 two-part series, explorer, writer and filmmaker Will Millard is at St Saviour's Church by Finsbury Park for a talk and Q&A about his latest adventure: a first descent of the Mano and Moro Rivers down the borders of Sierra Leone and Liberia.
