A new pop-up roller skating rink launches today. Going by the prosaic name of Skate King's Cross, this hub of eight-wheeled fun can be found in the West Handyside Canopy, to the east of St Martin's.
Those with long memories might remember a time before the railway lands of King's Cross were turned into an epic construction site. The area was then known for its clubs, including the weekly Bagley's Roller Disco at Canvas. Even Madonna had a go. The new skating rink is on approximately the same site.
The new rink provides a broader offering. It's open every day of the week except Mondays. Family sessions are available during the daytime, with a proper full-on disco, with special DJ nights, in the evenings. Disco Bistro provides diner-inspired food, and a bar serves boozy milkshakes plus more traditional tipples.
Speaking about the design of the new disco, architect Tarek Malin says: "We’ve used raw, heavy materials, in keeping with the industrial heritage of the area, but we’ve also used gold chainmail and custom light installations to reference the recent past, when King’s Cross was a mecca for clubbers, ravers and yes, even skaters”.
Skate King's Cross runs until 6 September. Some tickets are available on the door, but you're encouraged to book in advance. Ticket prices vary depending on session, but range from £13-£18 (full adult price) for a two hour session. Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday 10am-10pm; Thursday 11am-11pm; and Friday's and Saturday's from 12pm - 12am.
