Update: Pictures of the cockerel
It's been a long time coming, but a controversial blue cockerel will finally appear on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square from tomorrow (25 July). 'Hahn/Cock' by Katharina Fritsch was first revealed three years ago, beating off rival ideas that included an oversized Battenberg cake and a playable organ.
Other than erecting a giant sore thumb, it's hard to think of a sculpture that would stick out more against the classical buildings of the National Gallery. We suspect most people will be delighted by the contrast, but at least one local group is not amused.
The cock replaces the rocking horse sculpture by Elmgreen & Dragset, and will remain in place for a year.
