Our pick of London’s best theatre, dance and opera opening this week. Plus a reminder of those that are closing at the weekend.
THEATRE
Tonight, you can see the Talawa Theatre Company perform God's Property at the Soho Theatre, a gripping drama of family tension and racial identitiy set in a Deptford flat in 1982. There's Doc Martens and ska music all over it. Over at the Donmar, acclaimed film director Joe Wright makes his theatrical debut with Trelawny of the Wells, a romantic tale of theatrical life. At the Barbican Pit Theatre, Watt is a performance by Barry McGovern of Samuel Beckett texts. Also opening tonight are Dorothy in Oz at the Waterloo East Theatre, and Facts, which discusses the dangerous boundaries between facts and faith, at the Finborough Theatre.
Tomorrow, A Time To Reap brings a Polish village to the Royal Court to discuss Poland's hottest political topics, abortion and the Catholic Church. And from Friday, you can see a neglected early JB Priestly comedy at the Finborough Theatre called Laburnum Grove — but you'll need to queue for returns as the whole run is sold out.
DANCE
From tomorrow, you can see the ever-brilliant Ballet Black at the Linbury Studio at the Royal Opera House. They're performing works by a diverse range of choreographers. On Friday and Saturday, there are two performances of the Russian State Ballet's Swan Lake at the New Wimbledon Theatre.
OPERA
On Saturday, Tosca opens at the Royal Opera House. Jonathan Kent's production of Puccini's opera of political instability and menace is set against the turbulent backdrop of Rome in 1800. (See a brilliant taster video below.)
LAST CHANCE
There are a host of shows leaving London this weekend. Saturday is your last chance to see Feast at the Young Vic, Glasgow Girls at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Midnight Tango at the Phoenix Theatre, The Vortex at the Rose Theatre Kingston, Fiesta at the Trafalgar Studios, Kiss Me, Kate at the Old Vic and Privates on Parade at the Noel Coward Theatre.
Sunday is the final performance of La Traviata at the London Coliseum. Enjoy.
