Santa's Lap: Tube Tables
Last Updated 03 December 2012
Every day until Christmas we will be pointing you in the direction of a London-inspired Christmas present that (with a bit of luck) you won’t already have on your list. Climb up onto our collective lap and we’ll see what we can move from our sack to your stockings…
The Tube map, devoid of its familiar colours and typography, is still an instantly recognisable design classic. Artist Alex Hammond has sandwiched it between two sheets of toughened glass and mounted it in a minimalist steel frame to form this elegant table. As shown above, when top-lit the table projects in inverted map onto the floor, like some kind of ghost Tube.
The tables are made to order and finely crafted, so won't be to everyone's budget. But if you're looking for a handsome centrepiece for your living room that also neatly ties in with the imminent 150th anniversary of the Underground, this might just be the thing.
Tube map coffe table, £1,500. Contact Alex through his website for further details.
