Greenpeace activists have shut down 42 Shell petrol stations in London and are attempting to shut off petrol to a further 105 in a protest over Arctic oil drilling plans.
Nine arrests have been made as petrol stations were targeted across the city, including Old Ford, Fulham Cross and Hornsey. Protesters have also scaled the roof of the Shell station on Queenstown Road near Battersea Park.
The petrol station protest is part of Greenpeace's Save the Arctic campaign, aimed at preventing oil drilling and industrial fishing in the Arctic.The Guardian reports that Greenpeace understand that Shell and Russian oil company Gazprom will shortly begin drilling in the Alaskan Arctic.
In 2010, Greenpeace targeted BP stations in London in a protest against the company's 'reckless pursuit of oil' as well as scaling their headquarters. The organisation also took over Old Street last year in a novel protest against car manufacturer Volkswagen.
