Yuki Aruga is a young emerging artist who's already developed a signature style. She creates vivid floral paintings on black backgrounds and circular canvases. At the exhibition launch we asked her what inspired this motif:
"After several deaths in my family, I began creating works that were more commemorative to mark their passing. Previous works featuring fresh flowers and taxidermy have now become the focus of my paintings. Flowers are in bloom for a short time and I want to preserve and document their existence. The circular canvases are symbolic of the cycle of decomposition and of life and death."
If her work looks familiar it may be because she decorated two of the eggs in the Big Egg Hunt earlier this year. This is when she was spotted by L'Artisan Parfumeur and they asked her to display her work in their basement gallery. It's an ideal choice for the store as her floral works are the perfect compliment for their fragrances.
Ever Spring by Yuki Aruga is on display in L'Artisan Parfumeur, 13 The Market Building, Covent Garden, WC2E 8RB until 16 September. Entrance is free.
