Preview: Life Drawing Night @ Hampton Court Palace

While everyone's getting excited about the current monarch, Hampton Court Palace harks back to an era of royal splendour and over-indulgence.

The Palace has enticed Dr Sketchy, a monthly life-drawing and cabaret night, from its usual haunt at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern to the even more royal residence in west London.

The atmosphere of Charles II's court will be recreated, pencils will be distributed, and those assembled will be invited to draw two of the Merry Monarch's most famous mistresses: Barbara Villiers and Nell Gwynn, played by actresses. No drawing skill is required — it's all about having a go. Compere Ophelia Bitz will guide you through the basics of life drawing with her usual bawdy charm, and present prizes to the most promising artists.

Capturing Beauty takes place on Monday 4 June at Hampton Court Palace, 7-9pm. Tickets are £20 and also include admission to 'The Wild, the Beautiful and the Damned' exhibition, a look at virtue and vice in the late Stuart court.
