Remember the replicators in Star Trek: The Next Generation? Those futuristic vending machines that could assemble molecules together into any object, especially if it was tea, Earl Grey, hot?

Modern technology is quickly catching up with that 24th Century vision. 3-D printers, which construct real objects by building up layers of polymer, still bubble under the surface of mainstream cognizance but are widely used by modellers and architects to quickly and cheaply synthesise prototypes, and sometimes finished products. A new exhibition at the Aram Gallery shows just what these little boxes of magic are capable of.

Send to Print / Print to Send presents examples from the world of architecture, industrial design, fashion, and product design. Objects include lampshades, shoes, spectacle frames, chairs, tables, random cups, bowls...quite the little curiosity shop of designs.

No Earl Grey tea, though.

Send to Print / Print to Send is on at Aram Gallery, 110 Drury Lane until 25 February 2012. Entrance is free.
