New Wing Opens At The National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich just got a little wider. The Sammy Ofer Wing, which opens today, provides new exhibition space as well as a learning centre, cafeteria and archive research centre.

Prince Philip was on hand yesterday to cut the ribbon. The duke toured the new permanent exhibition, Voyagers, which charts the history of Britain and the sea and includes artefacts from his own naval career. The exhibition also includes a nautical art installation by The Light Surgeons, which Wired caught on video.

The wing's debut temporary exhibition is a called High Arctic and uses a frosting of clever gimmickry to explore the future of the polar region (tickets £6 adult, £5 concessions, £4 children).

The £35 million extension was part funded by shipping magnate Sammy Ofer, who died earlier this year, topped up with a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant. The new build also coincides with a rather attractive new website for the museum and its neighbouring attractions.
