Hither Green Cinema Campaign Targets Ladywell Pool

The campaign to bring a cinema to Lewisham by restoring Hither Green's old Park Cinema was dealt a blow last month when the site was sold to a carpet shop. But the group wasn't downhearted for long - now they've turned the eyes towards Ladywell Leisure Centre.

The pool and other facilities are due to be replaced by a brand spanking new Centre near Lewisham station in 2013, and the council is consulting on what to do with the building after it closes. Cinema campaigners (some of whom were instrumental in saving the pool from premature closure, leaving Lewisham without a sports centre, in 2006) reckon it would make a fantastic arts centre. The Council has just closed a consultation on the area, but we reckon its current proposals - a mix of flats and food shops (so, what, another Tesco Express?) lack imagination. A cinema and arts centre, on the other hand, could be just what Lewisham needs.

If you want to throw your support behind the campaign, there's an online petition set up and a community meeting on Friday at the Cooper Locke Gallery, Hither Green Lane, from 6.30pm.
