Thames Flotilla For Diamond Jubilee

Up to a thousand craft will take to the Thames next year to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Her Maj will ride vanguard, leading the largest London flotilla for several centuries.

The seven-and-a-half mile course will be populated by boats of all stripes: military, private, royal, public...probably Olympic. We're promised music from all six decades of her stewardship, daytime fireworks and (intriguingly) 'special effects'.

Boris was out, wielding adjectives like a desperate oarsman: "I cannot conceive of a more fitting celebration of Her Majesty's 60 years on the throne than a majestic flotilla of vessels, large and small, winding their way along the iconic River Thames and showcasing our proud maritime history."

The event will take place on 3 June 2012, part of the four-day weekend celebrating the Jubilee.
