Preview: Astronomy Photographer Of The Year

As the perfect antidote to the endless barrage of celebrity photos that confronts us daily, here's a compilation of real stars. And planets, nebulae, moons and galaxies. From tomorrow (10 Sept), the Royal Observatory Greenwich hosts a collection of astronomical photographs submitted to its annual competition.

This year's contest attracted over 400 heavenly submissions, all browsable on dedicated Flickr pages, alongside hundreds of other amateur shots not part of the competition. Entries come from all over the world and are judged over four categories: Earth and Space, Our Solar System, Deep Space, and Young Astronomy Photographer Of The Year. The winners, as judged by the likes of Sir Patrick Moore, will be announced on tonight (follow live on hashtag #Astrophoto10), with their stellar shots exhibiting at the ROG until 27 February. Entrance is free.
