Whittington Hospital A&E Saved

For anyone with a postcode beginning with 'N', it's been one of the most visible public campaigns in recent memory. The battle to save the A&E department and maternity facilities of the Whittington Hospital on Highgate Hill has been won.

Health Secretary Andy Burnham today ordered a 'complete halt' to the plans, meaning that all three main parties now support the facility.

The campaign has seen regular marches, intervention by the British Medical Association and door-to-door appeals as far as three miles away. The result is also a rare shot in the arm for the local press. Camden New Journal and the Islington Tribune have been at the forefront of the appeal, and today celebrate with a creamy dollop of partisan relish.
