Now On: Brixton Village Space Station Festival

spacestnmap.jpg Seems one of the themes for 2010 is going to be reappropriating empty spaces and putting them to good alternative use. It's not just artistic squatters, city farms and allotments getting in on the act. Back in October 09 The Space Makers Agency made the UK's biggest 'slack space' available to the Brixtonian community, encouraging creative and enterprising uses of the vacant shop units.

Whether or not you wield the Brixton Pound you are welcome at the Space Station for a free arts and performance festival now on until 23rd January. Artists and theatre companies will take over the space for hours at a time to rehearse, develop and perform work. Peer in if you're passing by or step in and observe. This Thursday there's a series of interactive installations by puppeteer, Kate Theodore and at the weekend, Firstborn Theatre Company explore identity through masks and run a mask making workshop. There's also the Space Station Gallery exhibiting work by local artists and photographers, open even when the shop is shut.

Space Station is open 9-6 every day except Wednesdays and Sundays and it's free to drop by. Keep up with the still developing programme at
