While debate begins over what will be done with recently saved Smithfield market, a gaggle of protesters have taken the bull by the horns and temporarily requisitioned it into a makeshift protest podium.

A group of four activists this morning scaled atop the north entrance of the meat supply market, and unfurled a banner cheekily reading: 18% of greenhouse gases are produced by animal farming. Fight climate change - go vegan. Their aim is to highlight the contribution of the farm industry to climate change, an issue they say is woefully underestimated.

A spokesperson from the protesters, who've popped down from Kingsnorth, guffed on about how adopting a vegan lifestyle can help save the planet by reduing reliance on animal products, as industrial farming currently "accounts for 18 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions". He neglected, however, to mention that vegans tend to contribute their own emissions via the noxious, self-righteous effluent pouring endlessly from their cakeholes.

Police are at the scene now, and so far things appear to be under control, with no road closures or other disruptions reported.
