Event of the Week

So you want to be a brain surgeon?, Thursday at the Dana Centre

Sometimes it’s hard trying to pick an Event of the Week. We were struggling this time, too, until spotting the following magic words in one of the listings:

Then it's your turn. And this is where the jelly and eggs come in.

It can only be the Dana Centre, which continues to outdo itself in dreaming up imaginative ways to engage the public. This week, after an abridged introduction to the history and current state-of-the-art, you get to be the brain surgeon. Albeit on an unholy melange of gelatine and egg. Sounds like a great one to take the kids to.

Art meets science tonight at the Dana, with an evening devoted to the mental health of Van Gogh. Did his psychoses aid the creative process? The Dana Centre have somebody dressed up as Van Gogh, to more colourfully address the question.

In a related, but less light-hearted lecture, Gresham College asks whether the prevalence of depression, anxiety and other mental problems could cause us to evolve into an ‘asocial species’. Sound like bunkum? Well, pop along and find out. If you don’t find daytime lectures too antisocial.

Back to the Dana, who are hosting a two-day event on Friday and Saturday. The Cybersonica Festival, now in its fifth year, is ‘a celebration of audiovisual performance and sonic arts’.

No more fumbling about with the old electron microscope. The Royal Society of Medicine opens its doors tonight for a very close look at, well, very close looks. Find out how to take ‘real time 3D images of cells and tissues at a molecular level, without any labelling or staining’.
