Libraries and whores are not natural bedfellows. Yet in the Wellcome Library on Euston Road you can work your way though more loose women than Genghis Khan on his gap year. The centre holds the world's foremost collection of tart cards -- those colourful adverts that decorate London's phone boxes. Stephen Lowther is in charge of the smutty stash, which forms part of the library's medical ephemera collection. The holdings comprise single sheet publications......

It's definitely time to think about how you want to spend the 14 February. Whether you're a sap for all things commercially romantic or a stalwart anti Valentine, it's important to know where you're going to be and what's going to be going on. No good staying in and ignoring the event if your flatmate's getting all hearts and flowers with their current kissing partner and no point trying to go out for dinner......

January is a toughie. Torn between new year's virtue and that rebellious streak? Well, here are some things to amuse you that at least wont tug too hard at your purse strings. Monday: Witch hunts to start the week at Gresham College from 6pm. Free knowledge. Tuesday: Are you a tech geek? Are you interested in search engines, the internet and web technology? Do you need to make more friends? Well, pitch up for......

Yesterday comes the news that a shiny new medical centre is to be built on wasteland somewhere behind the British Library….and today sees the start of the more-or-less obligatory protests therein. The idea is to build the £500 million ‘UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation’ as a partnership project – the key players are the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and University College Hospital. All very exciting. London could do......

The rather tortured word-play of "thera-pea" is worth it, trust us. We've got an extraordinary event for your diaries and all will become clear... Bobby Baker is an artist who has been bringing the mundane and the ordinary such as housework and healthcare into the world of art and performance for the last three decades, using food as her media and live presentation as the way to communicate. This means dancing with meringue ladies,......

This new space for science, arts and medicine isn’t yet on everyone’s cultural radar. It will be soon. The Wellcome Collection was opened yesterday by James Watson, the giant of science who co-discovered the structure of DNA. Watson said that we Brits ‘should be proud’ to boast such a centre, lambasting the rest of Europe and particularly the USA for lacking decent public science venues. And it really is a treasure. Three galleries chart......

Only March and it's already been a bumper year for science / art hybrid stuff that only makes us want more - more, damn it! More! Regular readers may have noticed a preference for the undead and the utterly unique on this site. Having received some information about a new exhibition at Londonist's favourite rusty-blades-and-decaptitating-hooks museum The Old Operating Theatre, we just had to share it with you, because we're assuming you love waxwork......

The words 'sublimely beautiful' and 'Euston Road' seldom decorate the same sentence, but here goes... Walk past the Wellcome Trust's HQ on Euston Road for this sublimely beautiful window display, and learn some science at the same time. The eyecatching fluorescent baubels, by designers Graphic Thought Facility, represent the structures of several proteins implicated in human disease. The rogues' gallery includes: leptin, a small protein that can cause obesity if it gets mangled; PPWD1,......

Interesting debate taking place tomorrow at 7pm as part of the " target="blank">Café Scientifique series at the Photographers' Gallery (5 Great Newport Street, Covent Garden). Basic research is a costly endeavour for any nation. How important is it for developing nations to devote scarce resources to science? And how can the global scientific community work together most efficiently? Those unfamiliar with the issues here can get plenty of background info from the wonderful SciDev.net......

Keep your diaries clear for 16 and 17 September, when Londonist’s favourite event, Open House weekend, will once again be unlocking its many doors for all and sundry (whoever the mysterious 'sundry' might be). For the few readers not familiar with the concept, it’s a chance to nose around private buildings that would otherwise be off-limits, and at no charge other than £3 for a guidebook. Everyone’s first question is: can we go up......

Could this be the shortest Cogito ever? Just three events this week. Probably a good thing as lecture theatres are the last place to be in a heatwave. If you do want some science action this week, the Dana Centre is your only hope. (No, there is another…we’ll......

Looks like King-Kong's been taking art classes. Bleigiessen, by Thomas Heatherwick, dangles from the roof of the Wellcome Trust headquarters on Euston Road. The numbers are staggering: Height: 30 metres. Wire used: 1 million metres Glass beads: 150 000 Installation time: three months. In fact, the sculpture is so large it can barely be photographed from one spot. We decided to get in a nearby glass lift and film it for you. Learn more......

Just a gentle reminder that the pre-booking starts today for some of the more popular locations in the 2005 Open House London . As we mentioned at the start of the month the actual event isn't for a month or so yet (17-18 September), but as it's free the most popular sites inevitably go very very quickly so you might want to get in there early to try and secure a spot. According to......
