There were tears before bedtime yesterday when a Facebook "splashmob" got a little out of hand and resulted in 9 people being arrested. The ES pictures show a jolly group of plastic bazooka armed lovelies frolicking in the evening sun enjoying a refreshing water fight but the BBC reports that the “high spirited” aquatic combat scared horses, unseating some small children riding nearby, so the rozzers were sent in to break up the fun. There’s......

The March of the Bishops: they stride out for an end to world poverty. As a new era of sportiness is dawning over the capital, Enfield’s athletics stadium is left to rot under piles of rubbish. Not a good omen. Eastenders may be one of the most popular shows on TV, but paying for TV is not at all popular with the real East Enders: they are named and shamed on the licence league.......

Tings are lookin proper bad for footballer Ashley-Paul Robinson, ya get me? The 19-year old Crystal Palace winger is in a spot of bother after he inadvertantly revealed his plans to move to Fulham on his Facebook profile. In an update on Saturday, the strikingly erudite Robinson alerted chums about his potential move to Craven Cottage with the following gnomic status update: "Ashley-Paul is goin fulham on Monday. If I pull dis off im......

Do you dread walking down Brick Lane because of the torrent of curry touters? Well fear not ASBOshave started being handed out to persistent touters! Who knew! As well as wasting time, facebook has proved it has it's worth by helping to catch a diamond thief in Ilford. Oh, Facebook. Something about being on the site just calls for people to post inappropriate photos and divulge private information that should probably be left off the interwebs. Even the police aren't immune to the lures of the Facebook Spill-Your-Guts Demon -- 18 officers were recently reprimanded for bragging about collisions and hurting members of the public in a group called "Yes I've had a POLCOL." All we could find of the group were three......

Whether seasoned alcoholic, pre-big-night-out-prepper or civilised imbiber of post work ale tomorrow's your last chance to legally sup an alcoholic beverage on the tube, DLR or buses. The minute our new Mayor announced this, Facebook groups started springing up with the inevitably super idea of Underground parties to mark the momentous passing of public transport subterranean boozing. They soon morphed into one big Circle line shebang comprising a gentrified cocktail party (elegant dress preferred)......

Have you heard? Boris is banning booze on all London transport come the first of June! Do you care? Many of your fellow Londoners do! And they’re planning parties to prove it. Grassroots campaigns both to bid adieu to booze cruising on the Tube and to openly flout the new ban are sprouting up all over – where else? – Facebook. Garnering the most attention is James Darling’s Last Orders on the Underground. The......

We wouldn't normally advocate Facebook groups, but this is one you HAVE to sign up to. You just have to. How amazing would this be? So now Life in Cold Blood is over, and the great man has hung up his broadcasting boots for good, what better tribute than to replace the starchy, boring voice on the London Underground with the silky, enthusiastic utterances of Sir David Attenborough. We'd finally learn what lives beneath Warren......

To celebrate World Rat Day we bring you a top tip from Mike Atherton over at Trusted Places: the Rat Race window display at Wieden + Kennedy. That is, a tube map made from real tubes, running around which are real rats. Cute ones too. These are no disease ridden, scraggy traditional London sewer rats, however, but 21st century, media savvy, Shoreditch types living in run-around rodent luxury. They're even on Facebook citing amongst......

Bourne And Hollingsworth, an erstwhile department store on Oxford Street, has been recalled to life as a snug basement speakeasy at the foot of Charlotte Street. Why? Who cares. It's one of those word-of-mouth Narnia places that would normally only exist if you weren't looking for it. Last night, hundreds of people were looking for it. The powers of Facebook had conjured up a crowd to witness the first Fitzrovia Radio Hour. The idea......

London's Latin American community will descend on Trafalgar Square this Monday. As part of a protest that is stretching from Bogotá to cities across the world, they will be marching on the Great World Rally Against FARC. FARC, or the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, is a guerrilla Marxist group that has fought the Colombian government for over four decades, the longest insurgency in Latin America. Listed by the United States and the EU......

Just when you thought MySpace, Facebook, and other social networking sites had pretty much achieved world domination, along comes a site with even more infinite aspirations. Londoner Victoria Vanstone’s yourdeathwish.com wants to help you create the “perfect” funeral. Yes, in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee, you could be well on your way to arranging the funeral you’ve always dreamed of: choose the musical set list, the wake menu, the......

O2, it seems, are cornering the market in progressive mobile gadegtry, already having the monopoly on the shiny smart iPhone and now the pilot phase OyPhone. Sorry, "Oyster Wallet" is the much more sensible and meaningless name for TfL's latest technology wheeze which puts your travelcard in your mobile phone and today, 500 Oyster users begin trialling the Nokia 6131 handsets with Oyster embedded. Barclaycard are also in on the trial, charging up the......

London is still the most expensive city in the world as far as public transport is concerned so it's always nice when someone comes along and offers to pay your Oyster Card for a whole month! The good people over at the local review site Qype.com just told us about their fab new competition that gives you the chance to travel London for free, for the whole of January (when everyone's skint anyway). This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 24. Llamas As Team Nice and the Niceties Campaign is a year old, last week we spoke of niceties tokens, which is the mechanism that started Team Nice. So this week I thought I would speak a little bit more about Team Nice. Team Nice is an ever-growing group of people (currently just under 1,000)......

You may or may not have noticed that this week is Amnesty International's Protect The Human week. Protect The Human week is a snazzy name for the week formerly known as Amnesty Week - a time when people all over Britain celebrate and raise awareness about Human Rights. Up and down the country people have been holding events in aid of the charity and this Friday the week closes in style with a bash......

So please raise a toast to our good health. For a more orthodox numerology, hold your horses (and champagne flutes) for just one more week. Then, we are three. To help us celebrate our birthday in something loosely approaching style, head over to the Grafton Arms next Thursday, from 6.30. We're in the upstairs bar and beer terrace. Full details on our Facebook page. Note that we won't be laying on any free beer.......

London Street Art 2 is the sequel to, well, erm, London Street Art. The pocket sized book chronicles some of the more interesting graffiti from the past year. We asked photographer Alex MacNaughton about his latest collection of images - many, like the shot above, show street art that has since vanished. Warning: Some readers may find his comments about Flickr disturbing. There's no 'about the author' on the book, so tell us a......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 17. Yeah whatever I did a little poll about why so many of us are apathetic towards politics. The subject of politics is so huge and disparate that it’s overwhelming, so for this I focused on the issue of tax. Now, once again the numbers were incredibly small (24) but have a read, as the......

Londonist has heard that Carshalton resident Garry Pugsley has been nabbed for carrying an eight inch knife in public. Not very clever, one would think – potentially dangerous and a tad illegal. Except that Garry is a real, modern, proactive wizard. We quote: “I am not an illusionist, I don't do tricks, and I am not a Paul Daniels." Although he does not actually claim that his knife is for ceremonial purposes, Londonist is sure......

National Uniion of Students uses Facebook to overturn HSBC charges. Are you listening Bob Crow? Are you? Speaking of which, Metronet may be 'hard to sell' because of its equator-sized debts. To use 2005 parlance, 'who'd have thunk it?'. Also up for sale: that massive annual arms fair hosted by Reed-Elsevier. Protests, public pressure and a well-judged bit of internal lobbying have persuaded the company to sell the event. Like the Metronet sale, this......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 14. Poll-itics Well, I did a quick little poll this week amongst group of 26 professional people aged 20 – 35. Just to ask them what they thought were the most and least important issues to the following parties: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green, Socialist, BNP and UKIP. The results produced from this (admittedly tiny)......

Sometimes it feels a bit like London is our very own playground. This is never more true than when Street Wars comes to town. Grab a water pistol, don a rather cool disguise and let's play! Allow us to explain. Street Wars is a three week event/game/festival of assassination silliness that you can get involved in too. It's already taken over New York and Paris and it's about to hit London. The concept is......

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose of crime littering the Bay Area, it found solace in Hillary Clinton's San Francisco campaign headquarters opening, which featured loads of exposed mammary glands. In other news, SF Taxi Commission ruled that Satan's cab must keep its (in)famous medallion number, 666; and in an un-fashion-forward frenzy, San Francisco Fashion Week (chortle) bars bloggers from covering and getting smashed at their shows and parties, respectively. Also, they found a......

Londonist loves Facebook, and we knew we weren't alone. The rest of London seems to agree with us. Last week, London beat out Toronto for the top geographic network on the hugely popular social networking site. According to the Guardian, as of Friday there were 790,615 members in the London Network. By our reckoning, today there are 819,908 London members, compared with 708,268 in Toronto, the next most popular network. The jump of 29,293......

It wasn't so long ago that London-based "social music revolution" website Last.fm was bought out by American media behemoth (no, not the band) CBS. We asked co-founder of Last, Martin Stiksel what it meant for the site - and what on earth is going on with Paris Hilton ... What does the CBS deal mean for Last? Apart from £140m, of course. It means we get the muscle behind us to do all the......

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, MP for Henley, journalist, historian, author and everyone’s favourite upper-class twit is being considered as the Conservative candidate for London’s mayor. After being questioned on whether he would like to run in 2008 against Mayor Ken, Boris enthusiastically harumphed, "Being Mayor of London would be a fantastic job and anyone who loves London would want to consider the possibility very carefully." He went on to state that he does......
