So very many opportunities to take advantage of this week in London! Summer's in full swing, and there are more outdoor festivals, gallery shows, lectures, film screenings, and general merriment than we know what to do with. Get started with this round-up for those light on the pocket jingle-jangle. Monday: Fancy yourself a BobCat? Heard all the rare B sides, own all the bootleg vinyls? Perfected your famed 3-pints deep gravelly-voiced rendering of 'Blowin'......

Amnesty International today recreated the iconic ‘tank man’ image, of a lone demonstrator - here, survivor Shao Jiang - facing down tanks at Tiananmen Square, outside Amnesty’s London headquarters in the run up to the 19th anniversary of the 1989 crackdown against pro-democracy protesters in Beijing. We sent along one of our Londonist Flickr Pool photographers, Simon Rigglesworth and you can see his full set of pictures here. Tomorrow at 6pm there will be......

T.S. Eliot wrote that “April is the cruelest month,” but we're officially endorsing Birthday Boy Bard’s more optimistic quote instead: “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” Feel young and sprightly in the warmer weather as you sample the Shakespeare-themed week ahead in honor of his “official” 444th birthday (his actual date of birth remains a mystery). Monday: And wilt thou be the school where Lust shall learn? One of London’s best......

Of the anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 people who apply for asylum in the UK each year, Amnesty International estimates that approximately two-thirds are turned away. Once rejected, applicants are given 21 days to leave the country, at which point those without children are cut off from financial support and accommodation provided by the National Asylum Support Service. Many, for reasons as complex as those that brought them to the UK in the first......

Last Thursday, Amnesty International brought Guantánamo Bay to London's American Embassy to mark 6 years since its opening and, more importantly, to raise the profile of the campaign to close the notorious detention centre. A replica prison cell was installed outside the Embassy and an all night vigil held. Kate Allen, Amnesty's Chief Executive, was one of the prisoners. The following morning, protestors joined the powerfully visual demonstration dressed in orange boiler suits and......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 16. Massaker Not meaning to be grim, but this week I attended a showing of a documentary by Monika Borgmann called Massaker, and having done so it is difficult not to reflect upon it. The subject of the film is a violent massacre that took place in two Palestinian refugee camps in 1982 at Sabra......

Ken's in the sights of The Standard again - this time for hanging out with terrorists: The Mayor met the wives of the so-called “Miami Five”, who have been found guilty by a US court of conspiracy to spy on American military bases. Details only emerged after he was forced to publish his full itinerary under freedom of information laws, having previously said the publicly funded trip was to build Olympics links and visit......

It's proper gig going weather now, so no 'it's a shame to waste the nice weather' rubbish, get thee to a venue and immerse yourself in the glory of music. And then come back stinking of cigarette smoke because the girls next to you spend more time holding their fags in a posey manner near your face, instead of actually smoking them. Anyway, more details of a gig we mentioned on Wednesday. The Sways......
