Secret London

Many people know about Mail Rail, an underground line used solely by Royal Mail to transport post across London until 2003, but few people get to see it. Last year we took a tour of Mount Pleasant station, and even took a trip on one of the passenger trains. See the video here, including remnants of Christmasses past.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: It’s the first week of the Easter holidays — find things to keep kids and teenagers entertained.

CLOSING SOON: Human Rights Human Wrongs (★★★★☆) is a photography exhibition depicting people across the world who have been denied access to the most basic human rights. Free, until 6 April.

EMIN’S BED: Today, Tate Britain opens a new display featuring work by Tracey Emin and Francis Bacon, including Emin’s famous bed installation and two of Bacon’s oil paintings, selected by Emin. Free, until June 2016

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: Since the fire at the Cuming Museum in 2013, its exhibits have been on the road. Today, head to Peckham Library to learn about some of the mini beast exhibits. Free, just turn up, 2pm-3.30pm

SCOTTISH ARCHITECTURE: The Royal Institute of British Architects on Portland Place is open late for an evening of talks, films, workshops and more charting 200 years of Scottish architecture and invention. Free, just turn up, 6pm-10pm

RAYNES PARK HUSTINGS: Raynes Park residents have the chance to meet and ask questions of its parliamentary candidates for the general election. Hustings take place at The Methodist Church on Worple Road. The deadline for emailing in a question has passed, but you can still go along and see five candidates having their say. 7pm-9pm

CRAFT NIGHT: The Make Escape is back at Hackney Attic (for the last time until July). The theme is Spring — have a go at making masks, knitting egg cosies, make a collage and more. Free, just turn up, 7.30pm

COMEDY: The glorious Festival of the Spoken Nerd trio (Matt Parker, Helen Arney and Steve Mould) are working up some new sci-comedy material at Bethnal Green’s Backyard Comedy Club. Highly recommended (so much so that we'll see you there). £8/£6, prebook, 7.30pm

BLUE PLAQUES: Join Ben van der Velde and chums at the Camden Head for a chucklesome history of London’s finest residents commemorated by blue plaques. £3, just turn up, 8pm

FREE GIG: Mancunian hard rock duo The Hyena Kill play a gig at The Stillery in Camden. Support act is Wicked Snakes. Free, just turn up, 8pm

BRIEF ENCOUNTER: UCL hosts a special screening of Brief Encounter at Stratford Picturehouse. Throughout the screening, Dr Hannah Fry, from UCL will be attempting answer questions about love — what are our chances of finding it, and how likely is it to last? £5-£7.50, prebook, 8pm


Good Cause of the Day

Book ahead for an opportunity to meet Jessie Burton, author of best-selling novel The Miniaturist, at a literary lunch at The Polish Club in South Kensington on 29 April. Tickets are £60, with money going to charity First Story, which works to inspire creativity, literacy and confidence in 50 challenging secondary schools across the UK.
