London Transport Museum Reveals The Secrets Of The Underground

Ever wondered how the signalling system on the underground works (no snide "rarely" comments, thanks), or how Emergency Response Teams deal with incidents on the capital's transport system? London Transport Museum will be answering these questions and revealing more secrets at Acton depot's Hidden London Treasures weekend.

Londonist's very own editor-at-large, Matt Brown, will be talking about secret tunnels and disused stations on the Underground, and there'll be demonstrations of how Emergency Response Teams deal with emergencies and keep the system moving. Visitors can also ride on heritage buses or a miniature railway and see London transport archive footage and a collection of scale models of underground stations.

Transport enthusiasts will be kept occupied by stalls selling vintage transport memorabilia and collectors items and can explore the depot's collection of over 400,000 artefacts including vintage Underground logo signs, uniforms, ticket machines, and photographs.

Kids can take part in a scavenger hunt, or have a go at building spaghetti bridges or sand tunnels.  And did we mention the miniature railway?

Hidden London Treasures takes place at London Transport Museum's Acton Depot on 25-26 April. Tickets are £10 adults/£8 concessions (under 17s free) and need to be booked in advance. Find out about other upcoming depot tours and events, including special tours celebrating 100 years of the Johnston typeface.
