It's all about longitude at the National Maritime Museum. Last July marked the opening of their exhibition Ships, Clocks and Stars, which examines the quest for longitude since Galileo Galilei's first observations and celebrates 300 years since the signing of the Longitude Act. The museum has been organising a series of catchy events connected to the exhibition, including this Thursday's Clocking Off Late.
The Georgian-themed evening kicks off at 6pm, and for three hours you have the chance to explore ancient navigation techniques, listen to Baroque music and even take a Georgian selfie.
Free your creativity on the night: design your own tri-cornered hat with seamstress Miss Emilly Ladybird, create your own 18th century-inspired wig with artist Sue Walker (find her at the Museum Café from 7pm) and help Indian visionary Chan Ranbir create a Clockwork World.
Visit the Ships, Clocks and Stars exhibition and, as you exit the exhibition space, don't forget to take a #GeorgianSelfie — you can then see the final results on the museum's Flickr pool. To unleash the Georgian within you, listen to some Baroque music played by The Frolick — find them in the Sammy Ofer wing foyer at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
Then it's time for some intellectual activities: watch the museum's curators being put on the gangplank (6.45pm), listen to poet Kelley Swain reading from her new book Double the Stars (7.30pm) or test your knowledge of Georgian London with a pub quiz conceived and presented by Londonist's Editor-at-large Matt Brown.
