Cyclist Dies In Croydon, Another Seriously Injured In Kennington

A cyclist has died after being hit by a bus near East Croydon station – the third cyclist to die on London's roads in a week and the eleventh this year.

ITV London and the Croydon Advertiser report that the cyclist, thought to be a man in his 40s, was dragged beneath a 410 bus around midday and died of a heart attack. This follows the deaths of hospital porter Brian Holt on Mile End Road on Tuesday, and architectural expert Francis Golding who died on Friday following injuries sustained in Holborn, also on Tuesday. Both Mr Golding and Mr Holt were involved in collisions with HGVs.

Another cyclist is in "serious but stable" condition after a collision with another bus in Kennington around 8.45am this morning. The junction at Kennington Park Road and Kennington Road is part of Cycle Superhighway 7. Twitter user @thisislucio posted a photo of the scene which shows it to be at a part of CS7 which is normally an unbordered blue strip (see above screenshot from Google Street View), the kind the coroner overseeing the inquests into the deaths of Brian Dorling and Philippine De Gerin-Ricard was so concerned about. However, as @thisislucio pointed out to ITV London, the road was resurfaced overnight and there are no road markings at all. Whether this played any role in the accident remains to be seen.

Another cyclist had a lucky escape last night after becoming trapped beneath a car in Spitalfields. Bystanders lifted the car to allow paramedics to reach Claire Pepper, who told the Evening Standard that the group saved her life.
