Preview: OAE Take Classical Music Down The Pub

This week players from the Orchestra of the Age of Englightenment (OAE) bail out of their Kings Place home to work a night shift in the local pub.

The Night Shift series unstuffs classical music by taking it out of the concert hall. Audiences are welcome to chat, have a drink and interact with the players in an informal setting. Past Night Shifts have rocked Village Underground and Wilton's Music Hall, plus they regularly transform the Southbank's Queen Elizabeth Hall into a classical nightclub after hours.

The OAE is famous for playing on original period instruments but they also bring originality to the whole classical music thing being more of a collective of musicians than a hierarchical orchestra and expressing a distinctive personality. And new audiences are coming to them through innovative ventures like these groovy, alternative classical music happenings.

This Thursday three of OAE's players will perform baroque music live in the Star of Kings pub, York Way. Try this Spotify playlist on for size to see if you'll like what's on the programme. Tickets are £6 (£10 on the door) and performances will be topped and tailed by DJ sets.

On Thursday 29 September, the Night Shift begins at 10pm with a late night, laid back performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No.23, with a support slot filled by Sunday Driver and DJ sets. Tickets £9 (£12 on the door).

You can get a feel for the chilled out gig vibe by having a look at snapshots from previous Night Shifts and watch the video below as a trailer to Thursday.
