Stormtroopers Take Over Old Street

Silicon Roundabout has been captured by Imperial forces. At around 7am this morning, a unit of Stormtroopers took up guard around the exits to the Old Street roundabout. Meanwhile, the Imperial March rang throughout the area.

It’s the latest stunt by Greenpeace. Climbers managed to scale the advertising structure above the roundabout and unfurl banners. Their target this time is Volkswagen, whom campaigners accuse of opposing European climate laws.

“But all is not lost,” says an information leaflet. “We feel the good in Volkswagen. They have the engineers and the experience to make some of the most efficient vehicles on Earth – we’ve seen them. That’s why all of us in the Rebellion are calling on Volkswagen to turn away from the Dark Side and give our planet a chance.”

You can read more about the allegations (from Greenpeace’s perspective) here. In the meantime, the protest continues (9am) with very little police presence two hours after it started.

The stunt follows on from the campaign group’s Piccadilly shenanigans from a couple of weeks ago, when attention fell upon Mattel.

great campaign, i was there in old street, it really gets your attention.

Just an excuse for these fools to dress up.  Either they need to get a real job to actually do something about climate change and stop just talking about it, or attack the real offenders.  Idiots.

wow, offensive aren’t we? As a company director, and a greenpeace activist I find your pathetic anger to be quite laughable. It never occurs to you that people who actually give a toss about climate change could take time off work to actualyl do something does it?
      how tragic.

      • Vigilant Satyr

I find your co-opting of fantasy characters protected by vigilant intellectual property lawyers to be quite laughable and hope that Lucas takes you to the cleaners for using them without permission. Your organization has long ago done away with doing anything useful, turned your back on science, thrown in with the anti-Capitalist movement, and now only fool yourselves into thinking that you can make a difference by “bringing attention to the issue” and then doing nothing else. Your stunts now only bring derision upon you and detract from any serious issue you choose to address. You are the clowns of the environmentalist kingdom. One of your own founders has turned against you and even publicly denounces you.
        Tragic indeed.

wow, you really need to find yourself a girl and get some of your testosterone off your chest mate.
I’m married to a scientist, and work as a software developer, so how the fuck ranting trollslike yourself think that makes me ‘anti-science’ is beyond me. What makes solar panels and wind turbines work? magic?
Typical anti-greenpeace aggressive bullshit from someone who has jumped on the ‘screw the planet’ bandwagon.
hint: Jeremy clarkson is NOT a climate expert.

          • Vigilant Satyr

The founder that left Greenpeace over their abandonment of science, Patrick Moore, is a climate expert however and has also noted how Greenpeace has become nothing more than a mouthpiece for anti-Capitalist groups. They left science behind a long time ago and have no problem with ignoring anything that doesn’t fit their skewed worldview nor with promoting misleading and even false information. Their stunning victories in saving the whales was incredible, don’t you think it’s time they quit sitting on that laurel and tried to find actual solutions for today’s problems instead of just screaming that the sky is falling?

I am anti-Greenpeace because they have become something that only detracts from our ability to get things done. I think your association with Greenpeace indicates that not only do you care little for science, you don’t care much for getting things done in the real world either. Associating with fools may teach you about fools, but little else.

Our occupation is full of people that believe all kinds of strange things. I’ve even had the displeasure of meeting a number of creationists, birthers, and truthers among colleagues and coworkers. They’re just as given to human foibles as everyone else is.

Erm, the people actually dressed up (IF they are indeed the 501st) are part of a worldwide organization known for their dedication to charitable causes.  As, such, they can also be hired and donate their profits (again) to charitable causes.  They also spend their time and their own money to visit hospitalized children, elderly, and even veterans.

Say what you will about GP but leave the 501st out of your vitriol.  Them I will defend unceasingly until they prove me wrong.

@cliffharris:disqus I love your defensive behaviour towards your actions… Your point of view is like a penis/religion… keep it to yourself and don’t ram it down any throats!

The campaign was lost in a sea of positive reflection on the excellent advert by VW and you wanted to make them villains, how did that fail for you? I often wonder if you ever stop to think that your “protests” are just becoming a little boring and your point being lost? Perhaps try something else like working with them rather than against them! I dislike Greenpeace on the grounds that your just bullies with no real goal or objective, you just don’t want people to do anything that you deem to be endangering the environment, rather than focus on alternatives that could help!

      LOL.
Greenpeace are bullies? this the same greenpeace that had their boat sunk an an activist murdered by the french government right?
But yup, we are the bullies, not the murderous thugs that people like you champion….

      • anon

Did I champion them? I said the advert was great… I can like an advert, I like Star Wars and the advert made me chuckle, I live in central London and ride a bike not that I’m an eco-nazi like yourself I’m just health concious and it’s quicker than the bus.

But again, you make the point of them being murderous thugs… what about the people buying cars are they also murderers? Does that make them also guilty? wouldn’t it have been better to educate them? Oh wait, the consumer needs their eyes opened to your point of view, so you take that point of view and bore the crap out of everyone with it… why not try educating rather than preaching!

Keep your eco-fascist thoughts to yourself and perhaps lead by example!

I hope Lucas and an army of Imperial Lawyers take Greenpeace to the cleaners for using his characters without permission for their pathetic PR stunt.

A PR stunt that you noticed, meaning a highly effective one.
      Back to school for you…

      • Vigilant Satyr

There is such a thing as bad PR. Anyone that tells you different is trying to sell you something.
