Although the Del’Aziz restaurant/bar/boutique bakery at Bermondsey Square has been up and running for about three weeks, they just got round to celebrating their opening last night. But with cocktails, canapés and mezze, a buffet service from the deli, belly dancing, snake charmers, shisha and more, it was worth the wait.
The fifth in this Londoner-owned Del’Aziz chain, the Bermondsey Del’Aziz is an attraction addition to the newly renovated square (we reviewed Del’Aziz’s neighbour Shortwave Cinema in May). According to a handful of locals, it’s a welcome addition too. Londonist got the scoop from a few Bermondsey folks (both at last night’s party and totally oblivious to it) that the new all-in-one Mediterranean foodie stopover (think Le Pain Quotidien meets a new and improved Tas with touches of Carluccio’s and Brindisa thrown in for good measure) now means decent croissants, last minute meals and no fuss dining out can be had in the area.
With this new Del’Aziz, Comptoir Libanais, Pilpel and other related food outlets popping up here and there throughout town, it can’t help but be wondered if London is experiencing something of a Middle Eastern food renaissance? So far, everything we’ve sampled in the way of nouveau hummus, falafel, mezze treats has been delish! Keep it coming!
