The Shard: Room For A View

Office space for rent, ideal for megalomanic with evil city-takeover scheme

A mockup photograph of the viewing platform on the Shard skyscraper at London Bridge has been released. The platform, which spans three stories a third of the way up the 100-story building, will offer a 360-degree view of the capital from a maxium height of 244 metres, double that of the London Eye at its apex.

The floor-to-ceiling glass, and what is described as an “indoor/outdoor” experience, will give would-be supervillains the perfect lair from which to plot their masterplans, as well as a fine view for terrified onlookers should King Kong ever deign to visit our humble city.

Work on the ‘scraper, which at 310m will be the tallest in western Europe, began earlier this year, and it should be completed in 2012 as part of the redeveloped London Bridge complex.

Then again, planning approval was only granted for the tower at 1 Canada Square on the basis that it would be open to the public, with a viewing gallery at the top.

But the Shard is different from 1 Canada Square in that it is much more about brand and image. The office component is saved for the less enticing bottom half of the building and upwards you get hotels, luxury apartments, a spa etc. This building isn’t just a place to maximise office desks, it wants to be famous and a public viewing gallery makes perfect economic sense.
