What’s for Lunch? Daddy Donkey

DD-Card.jpg

Londonist asks that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break.

Daddy Donkey
Trailer in front of 100-101 Leather Lane EC1
Nearest Tube:
Farringdon
0794 074 7676
11am-3pm for (Monday-Friday)
Expect to Pay: £5-6 for a massive burrito (erm, we mean “burro”)
Rating: 9.5 out of 10

A few weeks back we went burrito taste-testing for our new VERSUS series and, let down by our findings, felt as if we’d betrayed one of London’s most wondrous lunch providers: Mexican grill/street food vendors, Daddy Donkey. Odds are we’ll go astray again if ever we hear of more promising Mexican food in London. But, rest assured, we’ll always return to our beloved Double D.

We’ve sampled most of DD’s “burros” (apparently their main product is too grande for the wimpy title of “burrito”) and love ‘em all (okay, the steak, veggie and chili con carne are our faves). Everything else looks good on the menu (fajitas, quesadillas, tortilla chips with salsa) but we’ve yet to get past the burros. Quite simply, we adore them.

I love the bean burro. So delicious.

Good stuff to be sure. Word is that taking an extra home for dinner or the next day's lunch is a fab idea.

Well, I've finally succumbed ... it's a 2 mile cycle each way, but well worth it. I even took photos ....

elyobelyob,

You rock! We'd love to see your pics! You can add 'em to our Flickr pool:

What did you end up ordering? Take a burro home with you?

Cheers,
Chris

Have you guys tried Mexicali on Berwick St yet? Very, very nice burritos.

Stu n,

We've heard good things about Mexicali. How would you compare it to Daddy Donkey?

I've only had a DD burro at a festival, but if that was typical of what they're like, then Mexicali's are thicker and contain more fillings, and are more Californian style. They use mashed rather than whole beans (which makes them a bit less messy).

Stu n,

Thanks for providing us with the DD/Mexicali comparison. We'll add Mexicali to our ever increasing list of spots to review. It sounds pretty yum to me (so, it might get moved to the top of the list).

Cheers,
Chris
