A sprawling, grandiose drinking option on the southern edges of Clapham Common, the Windmill feels more like the kind of semi-rural pub you'd find out near Uxbridge or Epsom. It's bloody good, though. The bar staff are properly friendly. The massive dog padding around likewise. The pub goes back, and back, through a set of rooms we've yet to adequately explore. It's all very much geared up for some fine pub dining, but there's also ample room for the casual drinker. That extends into the beer yard out front, which gets very busy very quickly whenever there's a hint of sunshine. Drinks and food are typical Young's, although what constitutes 'typical Young's' is getting increasingly sophisticated. Trumans and Twickenham ales now reside alongside the brewery's usual offerings. And the food looks ever more tempting. If you're enjoying yourself a little too much to go home, the Windmill has a few guest rooms upstairs.
