A quietly excellent pub, this one. The small bar is the perfect retreat on a wet winter's night, when its diminutive dimensions and dark walls make for a cosy, intimate space. One of the pub's chief selling points is that it lets you bring your own food along and eat on the premises. Why? Because Whitecross Street food market — surely the best in London — fills the road outside every weekday lunchtime. The Brewers would be crazy to try and sell its own food with such a world-beating offering outside, so it goes with the flow and opens its tables to the burritos and burgers and paella of other vendors. Make sure you buy some beer to go along with it, though — four fairly standard ales to choose from. Oh, and don't leave it too late. The place is rammed by 12.30pm.
