The Castle has an olde worlde feel to it and, indeed, dates back to the 18th century — although the modern building is early 20th century.
The interior is an absolute charm, with four or five small areas to choose among. The decor is mostly tasteful and minimal, with a few curiosities dotted about: antique clocks here, cricket prints there and a selection of hats above the fireplace. A stash of walking sticks pendant from the ceiling had us (almost literally) scratching our heads.
The beer and food range is typical Fuller's — dependable, decent, but few surprises. To be truly King or Queen of the Castle, look for the outdoor steps to the left of the pub. These lead up to a secret beer garden raised above the pub.
