Arkley is the only village in London that could make a fitting limerick for Feargal Sharkey. And to paraphrase the big man, a good pub these days is not hard to find, especially up in Barnet. T'Ark is ostensibly a gastropub, with most tables set for Sunday lunch if you visit on that day. The smaller drinking area is nice enough, however.
On sitting down without examining the bar, we had to ask the waiter/barman which ales were on tap. "Black Sheep... from Yorkshire; Adnams... from Suffolk; and London Pride... from London," he replied, as though the provenance of these three common ales might make them seem more exotic. The wine list is more impressive, with around 15 varieties each of red and white. Service comes with more than a smile; the staff fall over themselves to be attentive and friendly.
The place looks ever-so-slightly ramshackle from the outside, but is tastefully furnished within. Wooden floors, wicker-backed chairs and a large, elevated fireplace all add a modern, contemporary feel. It's perfect for a relaxed, relatively inexpensive family meal. It's a bit of a trek from Barnet station, but the 107 bus stops right outside.
