Northern line passengers can interchange between the Bank and Charing Cross branches at Kennington tube station again from today (Monday 17 September), following completion of work linked to the Northern line extension.
Since the end of May, TfL has been excavating four new customer passageways at Kennington — work which has meant often having to alight at the station, despite travelling on the Bank branch, to wait for the next Modern-bound service.
In creating the new passageways, TfL has dug out almost 2,000 tonnes of spoil (mostly London clay) by hand, and used around 900 tonnes of concrete and 500 tunnel ring segments to create the new passageways.
While normal service is now resumed at Kennington, flooring and electrical works, and tiling of the passageway walls will continue.
The Northern line extension is due to open by 2020.
