It may be known as the longest station name in London, but for the best part of a year, Cutty Sark (for Maritime Greenwich) DLR station will be struck off the map.
The station closes on Saturday 31 May 2025 until sometime next spring, in order for four state-of-the-art, energy efficient escalators to be installed. TfL is advising passengers to use Greenwich station instead, which is about 10 minutes from Cutty Sark by foot.
As many London transport users will know, fitting new escalators is no mean feat; a typical 15-metre rise escalator has some 15,000 moving parts. Kentish Town's Northern line station was closed for 18 months — running some six months over schedule — when it had new escalators fitted recently. By TfL's own admission, the Cutty Sark works will be "complex", so let's hope this time a big enough completion window has been factored in.
Ben Grellier, TfL's Head of Operations for the DLR, says: "We know Cutty Sark’s escalators have been causing disruption and frustration for our customers and we would like to thank them for their patience during this period.
"We apologise for any further disruption the station closure may cause, but it is not possible to replace these escalators with the station in operation. Once installed, the new state-of-the-art escalators will provide customers with reliable and easier access to DLR services at the station."
